“Our Health, Our Right... Let’s Take a Stand”: Y-PEER Lebanon Uses Games, Theatre and Dance to Raise HIV/AIDS Awareness
Among High-School Children On World AIDS Day

On the occasion of World AIDS Day, under the patronage of H.E Minister of Public Health, and in partnership with the National AIDS Control Program, Y-PEER Lebanon is organizing a two-day HIV/AIDS awareness event among high school students, with the support of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund.

The event is entitled “Our Health, Our Right... Let’s Take a Stand” and it aims at raising awareness among high school children on HIV/AIDS and consists of three main activities:

Educational Games Circuit: A series of interactive educational games around HIV/AIDS animated by 8 NGOs active in HIV/AIDs prevention
Theatre Performance produced by school students
Dance Performance on the ‘Let’s fight for change’ song produced by the Y-PEER network and professionals

Around 800 high school students, aged 15-18 years, from more than 10 public and private schools from various Mohafazats in Lebanon will take part in this event.
The event is organized by Y-PEER Lebanon, with the support of UNFPA. The Y-PEER network is a peer education network of 130 young people aged 16 to 24 and affiliated to NGOs, municipalities, youth clubs and private and public schools in Lebanon. The Y-PEER network works in the field of youth sexual and reproductive health including HIV/AIDS prevention. The Y-PEER educators use ‘edutainment’ (education through entertainment) and peer to peer as main approaches. They essentially use theater, movies, games and dance as part of the educational process to reach young people easily.

Y-PEER Lebanon is part of a global network present in more than 48 countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Africa, Asia Pacific, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

This event celebrates World AIDS Day, marked each year on December 1st, and is placed under the slogan of “Universal Access and Human Rights”. It also falls in line of the international year of Youth proclaimed by the United Nations in August 2010.

The event will take place on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 December, 2010 from 10:00 to 16:00 at UNESCO Palace, Beirut. The opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday December 8 from 01:00 pm to 02:00 pm, with the participation of a number of stakeholders from the national education system, the health sector, civil society and the UN system. The opening ceremony will be animated by TV celebrity, Mr Tony Baroud.
